3D model of a power transformer

Updated: Dec 2, 2019

This post announces the first 3D CAD model added this website. The model is a power transformer with its major components such as cooling banks, bushings, conservator tank. The instrument used to beuild the model is clara.io which appeared to be a great online 3D modelling tool, albeit somehow lacking detailed user manuals as of January 2019.

This model represents a generic type power transformer having the following major components (also shown on the images below):

  1. Conservator tank used to accumulate the expanded transformer oil due to the tranformer's heating during its operation.

  2. Conservator tank level gauge used to provide an indication of the current oil level.

  3. High voltage bushings used to connect high voltage transformer winding to busbars or power cables.

  4. Buchholz relay used to provide an indication of gas bubbles inside the transformer oil.

  5. Low voltage bushing used to connect low voltage transformer windings to busbars or power cables.

  6. Cooling banks used to cool down transformer oil and to prevent it from overheating.

  7. Transformer breather used to remove excessive water (decrease humidity) of atmosheric air sucked into the transformer when tranformer oil cools down and contracts.

  8. Transformer fill pipe used to add oil into the transformer.

  9. Transformer frain valve (pipe) used to drain oil from the transformer during its repair.

  10. Main tank used to house the transformer windings and the transformer oil.

The model is done in clara.io and is available for editing and downloading from clara.io page (here).
